Scent Training
At MJ’s Pet Training Academy, we encourage all students to give scent training a try. Your dog does not need to have any formal obedience before beginning, and scent training complements other classes very well. Even while teaching your dog basic manners, cross-training in scent sports offers numerous benefits. Many students notice their dogs seem calmer after a problem-solving search. While some students may compete, our primary goal is to provide a fun and supportive environment for both dogs and handlers, regardless of individual goals. We believe in the many benefits scent training offers and want our students to enjoy discovering these benefits, too. Discover scent work classes in Acushnet, MA at our training academy through various workshops and a regular “scent league.”
What is Scent Training?
In scent training, dogs learn to search for specific target odors and communicate their findings to their handlers. Handlers learn to read their dogs and accurately pinpoint the hidden target odor. Dogs may start out searching for food, but as their training progresses, they focus solely on odor. They become so motivated to search that they can even ignore distractions, such as food or toys, within the search area. Dogs learn when it is time to search with the help of equipment such as a special harness and cues from the handler. No need to worry about your dog excessively sniffing in other sports such as obedience or in manners training. They learn the difference!
