Riley and Freckles
We are in the final months of 2026. As we prepare to enter another new year, we will all be questioning how time went by so quickly. Next May will mark 14 years since I opened MJ's Pet Training Academy, but long before there was an MJ's, I was preparing myself for a future working with people and dogs in my community
One of my first grooming clients was a Springer Spaniel named Freckles. I was about 13. I remember finding out my grandparents were getting an English Springer Spaniel, and being so excited because I was already hoping they would let me groom her. Sure enough, they did.
I was already learning about grooming spaniels because of my interest in English Cocker Spaniels. I carefully prepped the springer’s coat by removing loose hair. Then, I would trim and shape her nails, wash her, dry her, and finish her haircut. To think that the process I followed as a kid would someday transfer over into my business. Coat prep and pre-work are an important part of our grooming process today at MJ’s.
Growing up, the opportunity to groom and train dogs was something I took seriously. I felt lucky to have any such opportunity, and I hope my focus and dedication reflected that.
Years later, when I started my business in my early twenties, it felt like something I was preparing my entire life for. A lot has changed of course, but one thing I’ve always maintained is that feeling of gratitude for being able to work with so many people and dogs.
I’m so thankful for the people who choose to support my small business and allow the MJ’s team to care for their dogs. As another year comes to an end, I’m thinking about where I started and how much changes each year. I’m also thinking about how fast it all goes by. The thing that slows down time for me, that makes me feel present and gives me time to reflect, is time with my dogs.
When I’m training or spending time with my dogs, I can truly process it all. I write about the training I do with my dogs and the activities we share because it makes me realize things about those moments that I might miss at the time.
As you read this post, I hope you will consider taking some time to be with your dog today, to let time slow down and enjoy the many lessons dogs have to teach us. Thank you for being a part of our amazing community of dog lovers. Whether you’re local or from somewhere else in the world, I’m glad to have you here.
